There's a killer on the loose and each year it claims millions of lives! The Silent Killer we are referring to is Hypertension or more commonly known as High Blood Pressure (HBP). The reason it is known as the silent killer is because many people live their lives without knowing they have it. Symptoms of chronic disease progressively onset and many people live unaware knowing HBP is the cause. Overtime, HBP can lead to Heart Disease, Stroke and even complete cardiac failure. Both stroke and heart disease are major killers around the world and statistically the #1 killer in the United States.

Blood Pressure is defined as the amount of pressure on the walls of your arteries. Defining basic anatomy, arteries are the vessels that take oxygenated blood to the other organs. There is a normal amount of pressure on the walls of your arteries when pumping blood however they are very fragile. When that pressure is too high overtime damage will occur as the heart has to work harder to pump oxygenated blood throughout the body. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as of 2021 over 116 million adults in the US have high blood pressure (CDC, 2021). That’s a staggering 47%. Over the past few decades the number of people living with high blood pressure has significantly increased. 1 in 3 adults in the US have been diagnosed with hypertension and shockingly, 1 in 5 adults don’t know they have it (CDC, 2021).

Normal Blood Pressure

Systolic = < 120 mmHg

Diastolic = < 80 mmHg

High Blood Pressure

Systolic = > 130 mmHg

Diastolic = > 89 mmHg

Hypertension is dangerous for several reasons: Most importantly is its characterization as a catalyst to other diseases. If left unchecked hypertension can lead to severe hypertension.  Having severe hypertension puts you at a much greater risk of stroke or a heart attack which can be fatal. Hypertension over a prolonged period has statistically proven to lead to heart disease.

Fun Fact: The tool used to measure blood pressure is called a sphygmomanometer.

Every year heart disease continues to be the #1 killer in the United States, well above cancer and even murder. According to Million Hearts, an average of over 800,000 people die from heart disease (Million Hearts, 2021). This equates to about 1 in 3 total deaths. One of the most notable ways in combating hypertension is by pharmaceutical inception Pharmaceutical inception or use the of prescription drugs is intended to combat the side effects of HBP. Though they can be effective upon prescription, they typically cause other side effects. The range of side effects is unknown however only those with access to modern medicine will experience their benefits.

Modern medicine can be extremely expensive especially in first world countries. In some second and third world countries, modern medical practice may not even exist. Due to this insufficient medical accessibility, many people and smaller insecure groups must adopt alternate methods to prevent chronic disease. As scientific techniques and concrete evidence evolves, simple ways to combat chronic disease are becoming more prevalent.

In terms of hypertension two major evolving methods to combat HBP effects are becoming more physically active and improving dietary choices. Besides physical activity, nutrition is a key component to living a healthy lifestyle. Many health enthusiasts are adopting the usage of alternative medicines like herbs and synthetic supplements to combat the effects of chronic disease like HBP. Supplements that contain herbs like ginger and supplements rich in amino acids like Citrulline and arginine promote better circulation by enhancing blood transfer through vasodilation.
